PHP (an acronym for Hypertext Preprocessor) is a scripting language which provides many functions for file input and output, performing database queries, doing calculations, and much more.
Originally PHP was designed to preprocess hypertext. A developer would create a statict HTML document. Next, the developer would add some PHP code within the HTML document, enclosed in special <?php and ?> tags. Finally the developer would change the file extension from ".html" to ".php", telling the web server to run the hypertext preprocessor before delivering the contents of the HTML document to the browser. PHP would run its interpreter, turning the PHP code between the <?php and ?> tags into HTML.
Today, PHP has grown into a very powerful tool. It's used on over 200 million websites and powers many popular web-based software packages including WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, Concrete5, and others. PHP is open-source software and can be installed for free on almost any web server.
